HONG KONG, 15 April 2011 – Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation Limited (HKIRC) and UDomain Web Hosting Limited (UDomain) today announced the co-hosting of the first “Longest .hk Domain Name Contest”. The contest aims at promoting creativity by means of the Internet and enhancing the awareness of .hk domain name. It also encourages more Hong Kong people to utilise .hk domain name, which represents Hong Kong.

Usually a domain name should be as short as possible so that it is easy to remember and understand. However, domain names are not only addresses for web browsing but also signatures of their users. Extraordinarily long domain name can be a distinguishing feature catching more attention from the public. For example, is one of the longest domain names in Hong Kong. Everyone can register .hk domain names not exceeding 63 characters and be as creative and “long” as possible.

HKIRC is committed to promoting the use of the Internet and encouraging the use of .hk websites to enhance local businesses. Local companies, corporations, organisations and individuals can establish a unique identity on the Internet and develop a reputable and trustworthy local presence online. UDomain is also dedicated to promoting Internet development, especially with respect to domain name registration and web hosting, helping local businesses and organisations to enhance business advantages by means of the Internet. By co-hosting this first-of-its-kind contest in Hong Kong, HKIRC and UDomain hope to invite Hong Kong people to jointly contribute to the development of the local Internet community.

The contest will be held from 15 April to 15 May of 2011. Participants are welcome to compose the longest possible and most representative .hk domain name under the theme “Hong Kong people use Hong Kong domain names” and submit it through the Fan Page of UDomain. The awards include:
- Grand prize (1): Xbox 360 4GB console with Kinect and “Kinect Adventures”
- Merit prize (20): Microsoft Arc Wireless Mouse

All winners will get a .hk domain name and web hosting service offered by HKIRC and UDomain free for one-year.

The entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges with experience and professional knowledge of the field. The judges are Mr Charles Mok, Chairman, Internet Society Hong Kong, Mr Jonathan Shea, CEO of HKIRC and Ms Queenie Chung, General Manager of UDomain. The result will be announced in June.
