HKIRC “A Decade of Pride and Success of Hong Kong” 10th Anniversary Celebration
Unveiling of “Cyber Time Capsule”

HONG KONG, 16 May 2012– Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation Limited (HKIRC) held their “A Decade of Pride and Success of Hong Kong” 10th Anniversary Celebration at the Asia Society Hong Kong Center today, where the 10th Anniversary “Cyber Time Capsule” was unveiled. Through the “Cyber Time Capsule”, the people of Hong Kong can share the pride and success of Hong Kong during the last decade, such as the achievements and memorable moments of local Internet development. With the corporation’s efforts and the support from various industries, the number of .hk registrations has steadily increased from around 60,000 when HKIRC was established in April 2002, to more than 230,000 at the beginning of this year, of which .com.hk / .公司.香港 accounts for approximately half. This demonstrates that enterprises in Hong Kong have leveraged on domain names indicating Hong Kong presence to establish their websites and augment their company image.

More than 60 guests and partners from the government, academia, IT industries, enterprises and business associations joined the celebration to witness and commemorate the 10th Anniversary of HKIRC.

During the ceremony, Mr. John Estmond Strickland, GBS, JP, Chairman, and Mr. Jonathan Shea, CEO of HKIRC, jointly with Mr. Daniel Lai, BBS, JP, Government Chief Information Officer, and numerous officiating guests including Mr. Joseph Yu, MH, the first Chairman of the Board, co-founder and Board Member of HKIRC, Mr. Vincent Marshall Lee, Chairman of Tung Tai Group of Companies, Mr. Pindar Wong, Chairman of VeriFi (Hong Kong) Limited, and Mr. Sunny Lee Wai Kwong, Executive Director of IT, The Hong Kong Jockey Club, unveiled the 10th Anniversary “Cyber Time Capsule”.

Starting from today, citizens can share meaningful and memorable moments of Hong Kong by sending digital photos, videos, music and blogs to the “Cyber Time Capsule” website (www.十周年.香港 and www.10th.hk). The digital files will be made available again on the website 10 years later, so that we can review and relive these special moments in time.

“I am very pleased to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of HKIRC with all of you, and to witness the healthy growth of the company in the past 10 years, during which HKIRC has contributed to the rapid development of the Internet locally. We would like to give special thanks to the government, the Joint Universities Computer Centre (JUCC) and the forerunners of HKIRC for their efforts in establishing a solid foundation and giving guidance towards the expansion of the company. We are proud of HKIRC and will continue to devote our energies and efforts to the development of the Internet in the future,” said Mr. John Estmond Strickland, GBS, JP, Chairman of HKIRC.

“HKIRC has grown with and striven for the prosperity of Hong Kong throughout the past 10 years. To celebrate our 10th anniversary, we have organised a series of activities themed ‘A Decade of Pride and Success of Hong Kong’ to share the many joyful moments with the people of Hong Kong. In the future, we will continue our mission in promoting Internet application and developing more Internet-related services to enhance the competitiveness of Hong Kong in the global market and to sustain Hong Kong's position as a leading digital city, ” said Mr. Jonathan Shea, CEO of HKIRC.

Mr. Daniel Lai, BBS, JP, Government Chief Information Officer said, “I would like to thank HKIRC for its contribution to the Internet and domain name development throughout the years, enabling .hk and .香港 to become online Hong Kong identities for many enterprises, companies and institutions and for creating a safe Internet environment for the community. I wish HKIRC a brighter decade ahead.”

The e-commerce arm of Sa Sa International Holdings Limited (Sa Sa), sasa.com, has been a registered user of .hk for more than 10 years. Mr. Vincent Lau, Director of eCommerce of the Group said, “Sa Sa registered a domain name, sasa.com.hk as its web address 10 years ago, which successfully established its unique identity of its representative of Hong Kong. We intended to highlight it as a Hong Kong brand and enhanced its dominant position as an ultimate online shopping destination for cosmetics in Asia.” Later on, sasa.com also registered a Chinese domain name, 莎莎.公司.香港, which further strengthened its brand effect and image online and impressed its customers with its tailored website addresses.
