To help them explore potential online mobile market

HONG KONG, 26 March 2012 – Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation Limited (HKIRC) launched an QR (Quick Response) code generating service for free to all .hk/.香港 domain registrants today, in response to the rapidly developing smartphone market. All .hk/.香港 domain registrants can fill in the information at http://www.hkirc.hk/qra/eng02.html to generate their QR code. QR codes printed on promotional materials can be easily and accurately read by smartphones. The respective website will be accessed or email address will be stored automatically.

QR code is a small square-shaped symbol which can store long website and email addresses, breaking down the barrier of size limitation for traditional promotional materials and enabling enterprises to increase market exposure.

“In Hong Kong, 35% of all mobile phone users use smartphones, which is equivalent to the third-highest smartphone penetration rate in Asia Pacific, and there are 6.1 smartphones for every 10 people, which corresponds to, the second-highest proportion in the world. While using their smartphones, Hong Kong people also use other multimedia tools and apps such as online searches, sharing video clips and visiting social networking websites. HKIRC believes the new QR code generating service will help .hk/.香港 users ride the crest of Internet market trends, explore mobile online market and seize business opportunities,” said Mr. Jonathan Shea, CEO of HKIRC.

Registrants of .hk/.香港 domains can generate QR codes for their website and email address and then print the code on promotional materials such as posters, printed advertisements, brochures, and even on name cards, creating business opportunities within the mobile market for their goods and services. After downloading the decoding mobile app, smartphone users simply read the QR code on promotional materials with the phone camera. They will then be connected to the respective .hk/.香港website quickly and accurately without having to memorise a long URL address.
